Downtown
Projects Total Nearly $45 Million in 2003
Turn any corner in Downtown Cartersville during 2004 and
some type of construction or rehabilitation project was
happening. On Church Street behind the “under the bridge”
buildings, a $250,000 Slum and Blight Elimination grant from
Georgia Department of Community Affairs replaced the
water-damaged roof, created a brick wall rear facade,
Updated electrical and HVAC and made tie-in improvements to
city services. A Georgia Dept. of Transportation grant of
$500,000 was announced for Streetscape improvements from
Tennessee Street to Bartow Street following Main Street
through the heart of downtown.
The parking lot behind city hall along the railroad tracks
is currently undergoing $65,000 in improvements including
the installation of historic-style streetlights, repaving,
installation of
The refurbished city fountain, and rerouting of traffic to
the center of the lot. Landscaping is provided by a grant
from the Historic Gardens and Landscapes Grant of the Garden
Clubs of Georgia. The 8 surviving water oaks were planted by
the original mayor and council in 1878.
Georgia Power Co./Plant Bowen will donate picnic tables to
the park. Bike racks were placed downtown with a grant from
the Bartow Community Foundation.
First Presbyterian Church announced a $3.5 million
construction project to add a new education wing. Also
slated are $200,000 in improvements to the existing
facility. D. Morgan’s restaurant opened with the Southeast’s
second largest collection of wines in their wine cellar. The
former Knight Hardware building is undergoing renovation to
become a restaurant and sports bar. Integrity Plaza will
feature 15 loft apartments, up to three restaurants and
seven retail shops when open next year.
Downtown is a great place to have a business and
Cartersville’s downtown business district currently has a 99
percent occupancy rate for retail, restaurant, and service
businesses. The Cartersville Downtown Development Authority
maintains a waiting list of businesses desiring to rent or
purchase space in the downtown. When downtown property
owners call our office with available space, we notify them
of the types of businesses on the waiting list and they will
make contact with those that fit their building’s space
